Spring Softball Registration Is Now Open

Spring is softball season will be here in no time. We will have a comprehensive program for girls from Kindergarten through 8th grade. To guarantee that your daughter will be assigned a team and be able to play this spring, the deadline for sign-ups is Sunday January 15th, 2023.

If your daughter is in Kindergarten or 1st Grade, please click here to register.

Rookie League (Kindergarten and 1st Grade): is focused on learning to throw, catch, field, and hit. There will be more practice time than game time with fun softball related drills that teach the fundamentals in a fun active environment. This age group is an in-town league with no out-of-Needham travel and is designed to start off more like a t-ball program. Over the course of the spring season this age group will transition to coach pitch. Practices and Games will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings and they will run from 6:00pm to 7:15pm.

If your daughter is in 2nd through 8th Grade, please click here to register.

Minor League (2nd and 3rd Grades)

Players will continue to develop fundamental skills of throwing, catching, fielding, and hitting. There will be more practices than games to facilitate skill development. This program will be an in-town, non-travel league with all games played in Needham. We attempt to have games and practices during the weekdays, potentially weekends will be added to the schedule to accommodate all teams playing and practicing an equal amount of time. Players will pitch with coaches coming in to avoid walks and keep the pace of game up. We will have playoffs to crown a Minor's Champion.

Major League (4th and 5th Grades):

This program requires our Needham teams to travel to other local towns (mostly Wellesley as well as Wayland and Weston for some games) so that we have the best competition to play against. The games and practices will generally be held on Tuesday and/or Thursday nights as well as Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons. Families should expect 2-3 events (Games or practices) a week. Girls in this program will be playing real games with USA Softball umpires. Practices will focus on fundamentals, situational softball and learning the finer points of the game. There are playoffs as well in this league with a region Champion crowned.

Senior League (6th, 7th & 8th Grades):

This program requires our Needham teams to travel to other local towns (mostly Wellesley as well as Wayland and Weston for some games) so that we have the best competition to play against. The girls will be playing real games with USA Softball umpires and the rules will closely resemble High school rules to help the girls take the next step, however, there are rules in place to make sure girls get an opportunity to play similar amounts and in multiple positions. Games will be on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday with practices added based on coaches and players availability (Mon, Sat and Sun are most likely).

There will be playoffs in this league with a region Champion crowned. Needham was crowned champion the last year 4 years, so we will attempt to defend our title this Spring.

Season:  The season runs from April through June with clinics in March held inside gym space.
Player expectations:  Needham Baseball & Softball welcomes all girls to participate in its program. Girls are expected to participate in practices and games

15U Rocket Travel Baseball Club Team Wins State Championship

Congratulations to the 2022 Needham Rocket Travel Baseball 15U club team for winning the NB Select League Division II State Championship on Saturday evening.  The Rockets entered the Championship weekend as the #6 seed, leaving them with an uphill climb that required them to win three baseball games against higher seeds to earn themselves a state title.  In game one against the #3 seed Lincoln-Sudbury Bombers, Nick Buckley was the difference. He came in to pitch seven full scoreless innings of relief en route to a 7-5 victory. Griffin Carr had the biggest hit of the game.  Down one, he led off the inning with a triple and was later driven in by an infield single by Nolan Gannon.  After Gannon stole second, Jude Anderson drove him in to take the lead for good and send the Rockets on to the state semifinals.
In game 2 the Rockets got ahead early and never looked back.  They scored four in the first, and then 10 in the second en route to a 16-0 victory over the #2 seed NE Show. Justin Maira pitched a scoreless frame to keep the shutout going.  Key 2 out hits by Noah Fish, Luca Faggiano, and Alex Rufo helped break the game open and sent Needham to the state finals.
The Rockets flashed the leather during the championship game in very impressive fashion. Liam Fitzmaurice gave the Rockets four solid innings holding a very good NEB team to just one run. In the top of the fifth, the Rockets finally cashed in on the scoreboard. They scored three in the fifth and three more in the seventh. That was more than enough. Needham scored all six of their runs with two outs. The biggest hit of the championship came off the bat of Brian Keene. A two run double in the seventh that sealed the deal. The game was much closer than the score would make it seem.  A key pick and tag by Griffin Carr kept a run off the board in the 1st. A double play spun by the combo of Alex Rufo, Matt Ferreira and Charlie Ledbury ended a rally in the 4th. A backhand stab by second baseman Ryan Callahan kept a ball out of the gap and saved a run in the fifth.  Pitcher Jude Anderson knocked an absolute missile down with his foot and then threw out the runner to start the 6th.  And Nolan Gannon ended that inning with the catch of the year in Centerfield. The Rockets won the State Championship game by a score of 6-1.  Coach Ben Maki and assistant coach Matt Dunn could not be prouder of these young men. The hard work the team has put in since January paid off with the program's first title in its 8 year existence!
Rocket Travel (now known as Rockets Baseball starting with the 2023 season) is a competitive club baseball program that offers teams from the 10U-16U levels.

Needham Majors Mets Win Town World Series!

In the town majors World Series, in part with a last-inning rally, the Mets defeated the Red Sox by a score of 12-5. Mitchell Pollack took the hill for 5 innings, striking out 10 and walking 1, giving up 2 earned runs. CJ Galvin closed it out 1-2-3 despite facing a very dangerous top of the order for the Sox. The Mets had 12 hits, spread up and down the lineup, with everyone contributing.

For the Sox, Connor Callahan started and struck out 8 while walking none over 4 1/3 innings. In the AL pennant game, Brandon Lopez threw a complete game gem, shutting out the offensive-powerhouse Royals, while striking out 12 and walking just 1.

Noah Siegel led the Mets to the NL pennant with a complete 6-inning game, striking out 12 and walking 1, in a 9-1 win over the NL-West champion Rockies. Siegel and Blake Carr both went 3-for-3 with a double at the plate in the NL pennant game.

Pictured from left to right are Hudson Best, Brodey Kaplowitz, Blake Carr, Eli Roth, Ben Bean, Mitchell Pollack, CJ Galvin (kneeling), Zack Eacott, Noah Siegel, Max Kaplan, Sid Phatak, and Miles Getzik. Mets coaches are Barry Pollack, Paul Galvin, Erik Eacott and Kris Getzik.
